Neo-Burlesque (or New Burlesque)
is the revival and updating of the traditional burlesque performance. Though based on the traditional Burlesque art, the new form encompasses a wider range of performance styles; Neo-burlesque acts can be anything from classic striptease to modern dance to theatrical mini-dramas to comedic mayhem. As with the earlier burlesque, neo-burlesque is more focused on the “tease” in “striptease” than the “strip”. Neo-burlesque also welcomes and empowers people of all sexuality, size, age, race, class, and lifestyle!
is a sub-genre of modern dance, first recognized in the US in the 1970′s. The choreography incorporates an apparatus (often attached to the ceiling) that allows performers to explore the space in three-dimensions. The ability to incorporate vertical as well as horizontal movement pathways allows for innovations in choreography and vocabulary.

Not everyone sees the art, strength, and empowerment of burlesque. They have the right to their opinion, but I like to tell them that the greatest memories I have are that of a young Asian woman in the audience coming up and thanking me after a show for being a strong Asian female public figure. She expressed her frustration if the stereotype of the submissive timid Asian woman and thanked me for combating that image. Or having the middle-aged mom, just out of an abusive relationship, enroll in my burlesque booty school class because she “wanted to take back her life again.” Or the many women, who have been told that they’re not perfect or an appropriate lady, telling me that for one show they were able to feel more beautiful and okay with themselves just by watching us. These are the moments that drive me to continue to thrive as an individual artist and member of the burlesque and human community!
